FOR POLISH WOMEN WHO ARE EXPERIENCING DOMESTIC ABUSE

The ONA Service is aimed at Polish migrant women who may be experiencing domestic abuse. Our polish speaking ONA Project Coordinator will provide them with 1-1 support, information and advice, safety planning, help with housing and benefits, where to seek legal advice and how to report domestic abuse.

Our weekly polish women’s support group is an informal group that helps polish migrant women to gain knowledge about their rights and services available in their area and also make friends in women friendly environment.

We also deliver the Freedom programme in polish language. This is a 12 week programme that provides an opportunity for women to develop ways of thinking and acting to protect themselves, their children and other from harm; in a safe group environment.

WHAT IS DOMESTIC ABUSE?
As defined by the Home Office domestic abuse is “any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality.

This definition, which is not a legal definition, includes so called ‘honour’ based violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage, and is clear that victims are not confined to one gender or ethnic group.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

All forms of domestic abuse - psychological, economic, emotional and physical - come from the abuser's desire for power and control over other family members or intimate partners.
