About Us

Development of Luton All Women’s Centre

Luton All Women’s Centre arose as a result of a series of consultation exercises in the early 1990’s in which Luton Borough Council sought information about the needs of Women and ways forward to address issues.

LAWC was established in 1993 with Luton Borough Council providing the premises and a seconded staff member, and developing additional seconded staff and a steering group which successfully worked with the Council for over 10 years, developing services and activities for local Women.  The work of the Centre has evolved from an informal ‘drop-in’ venue, to one of structured delivery organised to tackle problems that affect the quality of life well being.

In 2003 the group took the decision to form a Company Limited by Guarantee as a non profit making organisation and to gain charitable status. Single Regeneration Funds (SRB) were secured and enabled LAWC to deliver health and wellbeing and first tier advice work in some of the most deprived wards in Luton.  Lottery Funding was also secured in this period which provided a manager post to run the women centre and extend the advice sessions.

The Project is the lead campaigner for women’s rights and equal opportunities for Women in Luton.  It has a service level agreement with the local council to provide a range of Women’s services, Women’s issues are promoted through seminars and conferences relating to employment, education, access to services and focussing on issues such as domestic abuse, forced marriages etc and also through celebrations of Women’s achievements via International Women’s Day and other similar events.
We have developed a range of services to address the changing needs of Women in Luton.
